Shared versus Dedicated Server Hosting

A web hosting service provides a user with the opportunity to get their website onto the internet for either private or public viewing. Before a user can select a web hosting service, they first need to decide on their domain name and then register it. There are three main types of web hosting services to choose from. There is dedicated server hosting, virtual private server hosting, and shared web hosting.

Shared Web Hosting
With shared web hosting there are many small users who upload and operate their websites from one shared server. This type of hosting can be used by individuals as well as some small businesses and organizations that don’t require a large amount of disk space or bandwidth. This type of hosting also assumes that you will not have heavy amounts of traffic coming to your website.

With shared web hosting, all of the server maintenance and organization as well as security updates and software installation are managed and maintained by the web hosting provider. The web hosting companies use software such as Helm or Direct Admin as the control panel to govern the server. Many shared web servers work off of only Linux OS due to the fact that it is compatible with the control panels that are available in the market.

There are also a few web host providers who offer Microsoft Windows and FreeBSD platforms as well. These types of services are often less expensive. However there aren’t too many web hosting providers who can provide full facilities for Windows web hosting. This type of hosting can be either IP based or name based hosting. With name based hosting there can be several names that are used with one IP. With IP based hosting each website has a dedicated IP.

Dedicated Web Hosting
With dedicated web hosting each website has its own dedicated web server. Other websites do not share the server. This type of web hosting will be needed for websites that expect heavy traffic. The plans provide much larger amounts of bandwidth than a shared web hosting account to help handle large amounts of traffic. You will also need dedicated web hosting if you have secure information, complex applications or have customized options on your website.

This type of hosting provides users with one hundred percent control as well as one percent responsibility for keeping their websites running smoothly and consistently. Because of this, proper management is needed to monitor and fix any potential problems immediately. Professions who need to have complete control such as commercial websites and large organizations will want to choose dedicated web hosting.
